Warsaw has a lot to offer; unique buildings, interesting museums, delicious food and exciting nightlife. Probably the most famous place in the city is the Wilanow Palace also known as the Versailles of Poland.
The Old Town being the UNESCO World Heritage site has many beautiful buildings. Taking a walk there was a delight. Most of the places there act as coffee shops and restaurants during the day and bars at night. Walking around Ghetto and imagining all the atrocities commited by Nazis hit hard and was pretty emotional for me.
Eating at a Food Hall is a must when in Warsaw. These Halls offer not just pierogi, but a wide range of international cuisine and lovely music you can listen to while enjoying your drinks.
But definitely my favourite thing about this city is that Chopin’s heart is buried in one of the churches on the Royal Route. I didn’t go to the church, but I found Chopin’s monument in Lazienki Krdewskie Park. The ambience of this place is surreal. There are piano virtuosos from all over the world coming to perform Chopin’s music around his monument. The music took me to another world and I wanted to stay there for hours.
The Market Square was a surprise to me, because it has a mermaid statue. I always thought the mermaid belongs to Copenhagen, but apparently it’s one of Warsaw’s symbols, too. The legend says it’s the Little Mermaid’s sister and they went separate ways from the Baltic Sea.
This mermaid decided to take a break on a riverbank near the Old Town. Warsaw’s fishermen noticed their nets being tangled and their fish released. When they saw the mermaid, they wanted to capture her. The mermaid realizing she is in trouble started singing. The fishermen fell in love after hearing her and decided to let her go. But a rich merchant trapped the mermaid and wanted to exploit her for his gain. She cried and cried while being imprisoned. Luckily, the fishermen heard her and rescued her. Since then, the mermaid, with her sword and a shield, is protecting the city and its residents.
Beautiful gardens, many museums, unique University Library, the tallest building in the European Union and the Vistula river made my stay in Warsaw unforgettable. Eventhough I enjoyed my time there, I felt like something was missing.
You were missing. You were the missing part in experiencing all this. I wished you were there for a picnic in one of the many parks in the city. I wished you were there for a romantic cruise down the river. I wished you were there to enjoy Chopin. For all of it. I wished you were the fisherman who heard my cry and rescued me from the prison of my broken heart.
